I am planning a surprise visit to Bakwena House in Kilner Park, Pretoria during October/November.
Bakwena is a safe house/orphanage for teenagers with HIV/Aids. At the moment they have about 10 kids living there permanently. Below I list some of their needs. If you can donate any redundant items, please let me know ASAP. (No need to buy new stuff. Remember my post about spring cleaning???)
- Teen clothing
- Sport equipment (rugby/soccer balls, cricket sets, trampoline, etc)
- Entertainment like dvd’s, cd’s, board games, books and magazines
- Educational supplies (computer games, PC-cd’s like Encarta, etc)
- Bed and bath linen
They would also love to be treated a bit with cakes and sweets (of course they would!) and, more than anything, they would ADORE your company, so why don’t you join me one Saturday. Bring your donation with and we can surprise these unfortunate kids, who did not ask for this death sentence (they were are all born HIV+). Some of them have a lot of trouble adapting to their health status and, in addition to the normal physical and emotional changes that goes with being a teenager, this can be quite daunting. They need a lot of support and, of course, they need to know that people don’t shun them because of their disease. So, if you can find it in your heart to help, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Click here to e-mail me with your details and I’ll be in touch.
(Don’t worry if you cannot deliver your donation. If you are in the Pretoria area, I can arrange pick-up and if you are from elsewhere in the country, just let me know and we’ll make a plan. But please, if you are in a position to help these teens, do so….they will appreciate it very much.)
