According to a new report there are currently an estimated 45.8 million people in slavery around the world in 167 different countries. The study done by Walk Free Foundation recently published their data in their 2016 Global Slavery Index. The study saw a 28% increase from the previous study done two years prior. The organization attributed the increase to better data collection and research. Thus whether slavery is increasing or decreasing is still unclear.
According to the report, India is ranked the worst in total numbers with 18.35 million in slavery alone. North Korea has the highest per capita level with 4.37% of their population in slavery. The United States falls relatively low on the list, however it still clocks in with over 57,000 estimated people trapped in slavery.
