CALLING #knitwits for @67Blankets #SSS #Charity #SouthAfrica

ATTENTION ALL #KNITWITS AND #WOOLIGANS!!!

The #SSS (Secret Scarf Shhh….Mission) is drawing closer.  Have you started crocheting or knitting your contribution to this cause yet?

Our annual #SSS will take place on 13 July 2017 at 15:00 (3pm). 67 Blankets ambassadors from all over South Africa will summon their volunteers and gather their donated scarves. They will select an area or areas in their towns or cities where people are especially destitute. On 13 July at 3pm, they will gather at a specific point in that area to distribute their collection of scarves among the people as they come home from work.

You must keep your eyes peeled, for the country will suddenly be painted all colours of the rainbow. Poles and fences will sprout bright woollen scarves and trees will bear scarf-fruit. Attached to each one will be a personal message from @67Blankets in the language of the area.

67-blankets

To make all this happen, we will obviously need more scarves. You can therefore be of enormous help if you get involved. Whether you donate one scarf or 20, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that your scarf will be a gift to someone who desperately needs to keep warm. Your scarf will show a person that there are actually still people in the world who care about their fellow human beings.

Cannot knit or crochet? No problem. You can donate towards the cause (funds or wool) or you can sponsor a friend or family member who can knit or crochet by purchasing their wool.

Just to encourage you more, I am sharing another scarf pattern today. It may not be such a warm scarf, but when made with thicker wool, perhaps it will do the job.

I give you: The Island Lace Crochet Scarf. Find the pattern here: bit.ly/2t4Olnt

REMEMBER: Get in touch or just comment on this post if  you wish to donate or become more involved with the project. Or simply complete the contact form at the bottom of this post.

Doing their bit for @67Blankets at #Tlhokomelang

IMG-20170529-WA0000

Just two weeks ago Kabelo collected donated wool from me and look how far the group has come!! She took the initiative when she noticed that the elderly in the community was becoming a bit bored and feeling unworthy. As they already had the skills to crochet, I thought doing something for 67 Blankets will be perfect to fill their empty hours.

Well, both the ladies and the gentleman surprised me with their enthusiasm.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Thank you to the elderly at Thlokomelang in Mabopane for doing your bit to give back to the community.

Robert, who donated the wool would be so pleased to know that it is being put to good use. Very soon I’ll be making a trip to the centre to pick up the squares, which will be sewn into blankets to give warmth and comfort to the needy.

SAVE THE DATE! Our 2017 Undercover Scarf Mission…shhh is in two months

Scarf 2017 4

Can you believe it is winter already!! This year is just FLYING past, isn’t it?

Many of you will remember our #ScrarfDrive from last July. Well, the good news is, WERE AT IT AGAIN!! AND…you are invited! Join us on Thursday, 13 July 2017 as we venture out into the community to spread some much needed warmth. We will paint Pretoria red, and pink, and blue, and yellow….all the colors of the rainbow, much like the people of our beautiful country.’

But, before we can do this, we will need LOTS AND LOTS of scarves and wool to make them. If you can knit or crochet, don’t waste another second, get those needles clicking!! If you can’t knit or crochet, you can still donate wool and needles so that others can to the work. With your support we will be able to reach out to those who need help desperately during these bitterly cold months. If you are willing and able to assist us in our efforts, please do not hesitate to email us (click  here) or complete the contact form below.

For more information on how you can get involved with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, get in touch or visit our website here.

In the meantime, I’m sharing a note from our Queen of Knitwits, Carolyn Steyn, below:

“Dearest KnitWits for Madiba,

We have worked our fingers to the bone making blankets for people less fortunate and for this I extend my most heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you that has already contributed blankets this year.

We are now in the midst of distributions – working with our Ambassadors and KnitWits for Madiba – and STUTTAFORD VAN LINES!!! – handing out our thousands of blankets to orphanages, old aged homes and informal settlements.

Now that our big work has been done for the year, I suggest we all have a nice cup of tea with friends (or in our own quiet time) and CHURN out as many SCARVES as you possibly can for this special day which has become an annual day of giving on the part of our 67 Blankets family.

In parks, around trees, parking metres, lamp posts etc. at the EXACT same time and date – ALL around our beautiful country – we will display our scarves (made with love) – each one bearing our special trademark logo and message : “I AM NOT LOST. IF YOU ARE COLD AND NEED ME, PLEASE TAKE ME. LOVE, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day”.

People on their way home, walking to bus stops and taxi ranks from school and work, will be gloriously surprised by our colourful displays and messages of love and warmth.

SO, in the next few days, let’s see just how many SCARVES we can quickly churn out!!!

Please post pictures!!! And let’s get rocking with this project – also not forgetting our #MMM (Massive Mandela Masterpiece)!!! We need all those blankets handed in by December so that South Africa can make HISTORY next year to mark Madiba’s 100th year.

But right now think “SCARVES, SCARVES, SCARVES”!!!!

Love,

Carolyn

And there you have it! Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Please complete the contact form below if you wish to support our cause in any way by donating wool, crochet-or knitting needles or if you wish to become more involved with a knitwit-group in your area.

Welcome to 2017! @67Blankets

capture

It is a new year, everybody! Welcome back! Hope you all had a wonderful festive season.

Did you get any woolworks done this holiday? All those lazy hours by the pool or on the beach….tell me! I must confess, I could have done more, but I was just too busy relaxing! However, our lady of Wool, Carolyn Steyn, did NOT forget her creative cap at home. She finished her first pledged blanket, despite enjoying a lovely family getaway! Truly an inspiration, this leader of ours!

In addition to having finished her own blanket, Carolyn received 3 blankets from our representatives in  India!

https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F67blankets%2Fposts%2F1800334040225694&width=500

Indian superwoman, Rani Thomas, is currently at work in her country, inspiring the beautiful knitwits of India to complete their 100 pledged blankets for our Mandela Portrait Blanket.

And now: a VERY IMPORTANT announcement: Do mark April 24, 2017 IN RED on your calendars! That is THE BIG DAY when we plan to display the creative genius of all our knitwits in the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day-family  AND YOU ARE INVITED!

Just in case the holidays managed to dull your memories, here is what all knitwits are invited to do: crochet or knit blankets measuring 160cm/160cm before April 2017. Your contribution will form part of an enormous blanket that will measure 4515 square metres. The result will only be visible from the air and will show the portrait of our beloved Nelson Mandela. It will be displayed at Steyn City to commemorate 23 years of freedom AND his birthday.

You can be part of this remarkable event. Pledge your blanket TODAY and help us create the  biggest picture blanket EVER.

REMEMBER: you can either pledge a blanket or make squares measuring 20cm/20cm in the required colors. If you can’t knit or crochet, you are also welcome to donate wool or sponsor someone you know who can craft squares/blankets.

Don’t Forget! @67Blankets #PortraitBlanket #WoolChallenge #NelsonMandela #YesWeWool

It is leisure time…every one, everywhere in the world is winding down towards the end of the year. Those of you not yet on holiday, will soon be packing bags and heading to your favorite Christmas holiday destination.

I am SO looking forward to this time of rest; 2016 has been one of THOSE years where I just seem to have less and less time and more and more work! Well, you know what they say, all work and no play, turns this knitwit into a dull, double-knit grey!

Speaking of grey…..don’t you agree that, with all these empty days stretching in front  of us, we can finally settle down and do what we really love? Aaaah, do I detect some sparkles in those eyes (or is it the crochet hook in my eye?)… You KNOW what I’m talking about! WOOLWORKS!! And the mention of ‘grey’ brought to mind that wool challenge our fearless leader thought up. I know it is silly to ask if you remember it; crocheting and knitting squares in grey, blue, yellow, black and red is all you’ve been doing for the past few months!! Filling your holiday days (that just doesn’t sound right, but you get what I mean) with crochet hook in one hand and a nice cuppa in the other is just the thing to heal a tired, wounded soul after a long, busy year. Now is the time to get clicking and finish your share of this project. You can hand it in during January and pledge another blanket (or six) OR you can throw caution to the wind and start your own project for our blanket drives during the winter months!

Look at this beautiful portrait blanket; now imagine it BIGGER, much BIGGER!!

mandelablanketexample

Just to refresh the old noodle again, you see, us knitwits focus on more important things than memory and brain health and who has the time to jot down notes when you can quickly finish a few rows? Let’s recap:

The Queen of Knitwits, Carolyn Steyn, challenged the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day-family to crochet or knit 1 764 blankets measuring 160cm/160cm before April 2017. To commemorate #23yrsOfFreedom we are planning on creating the #biggestpictureblanket EVER of our beloved #NelsonMandela . The blanket will measure 4515m2 and will be displayed at Steyn City. Do I smell another world record???

Every single one of these blankets will help to keep the less fortunate in South Africa warm next winter.

You can either pledge a blanket or make squares measuring 20cm/20cm in the required colors.
